Liminal Season

outside burning brittle city rusts
branches haven’t yet budded
reaching red like frigid fingers
trunks gnarled barren gray and brown
parking lot brick garden boxes
overflow with drowsy daffodils
yellow headed tilting back
many looking down
people jacketed faces pinched
leaving work heaving sighs
shrugging off one muffling mask
to don another home
