The Hunt

the stream sang these from its vertices
turn ripple run ripple splash ripple run
the hunted then the dogs 
then a hunter and a gun

the wounded prey the leaves
rustle crinkle rustle shuffle hush
cold and wet and aching 

baying of hounds in the bush
in the echoing report the hunter reaves
singing blood a throat 
a thirst that needed slaking

turn ripple run ripple splash ripple run
