The Persistent Color of Absence

now we’re approaching the time when
the carelessness of your absence
tinges the late afternoon light

in the distance of our son’s eyes
the peppered rind of your defense
the seed shell lying at his roots

still my anger and disbelief
one moment texting me requests
the next you were off with a shot
